Description

The VIN - WMI Technical Committee reports to the Vehicle Engineering Systems Group of the Motor Vehicle Council. The Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports related to the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and World Manufacturers Identifier (WMI) for road vehicles. The committee also makes recommendations for changes to US regulations and ISO Standards concerning VIN-WMI issues. The committee has successfully petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promulgate rulemaking to revise the United States VIN regulation. The committee's Phase I focus is to assess the content of the present VIN-WMI and consider the worldwide future needs (either expansion/reduction of code or change of code segment meanings) for on-road vehicles, specifically passenger cars, light- and heavy-duty trucks, multipurpose passenger vehicles, buses, motorcycles, motor-driven cycles, trailers, low-speed vehicles, and incomplete vehicles. The committee's Phase 2 focus is to assess the form and placement of the VIN-WMI on the on-road vehicles mentioned in Phase 1. Participants in the SAE VIN - WMI Technical Committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, law enforcement, insurance, and other interested parties.
